Before and after reno: Amazing inner-city cottage transformation

This property at 44 Crase St, Teneriffe, is going to auction on April 27.

WHAT do you get with the combined brainpower of a dentist and a physiotherapist academic?

The need for a creative outlet so great you dream up designs for luxurious homes in your spare time, apparently.

The current owners of 44 Crase Street, Teneriffe — a character cottage cum contemporary masterpiece — have a knack for home design their day jobs would belie.

But dentist Chris Souvlis and wife Tina, a University of Queensland physiotherapy academic, are used to blowing apart stereotypes.

“I have an Italian background and Chris is Greek, so that in itself was unusual,” Ms Souvlis said.

“My daughter put together a family cookbook with a picture of her Greek and Italian grandmothers throwing food at each other in New Farm Park, which was of course a joke.

“Chris is actually the cook in the family. He is very creative, and I suppose that doesn’t always go hand in hand with being a dentist.”

Growing up in New Farm, Ms Souvlis migrated to the southside of Brisbane when she married Chris, but her old haunt drew her back by 2005 and the pair’s love affair with renovating homes began.

“We used to come to New Farm for a walk by the river and to eat, and we watched all of the change that happened over the years,” she said.

“In 2005, we came back to Teneriffe and then did up a house in James Street and one in Villiers Street, New Farm.

“Our style is to preserve the cottage façade of the original homes, but make them very contemporary and modern inside.”

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom abode is true to the formula, with French oak and porcelain combined with granite and strategically placed skylights to achieve a newfangled elegance.

AFTER: The living area has been completely redesigned.

Developed in conjunction with Monster Ideas Architects across 377sqm, the home was designed around the block’s resident Norfolk Pine to reconcile with the greenery, sunlight, and peninsula breezes.

And there are a few signature inclusions Ms Souvlis “had to have”.

“I wanted it fully tiled, and they indulged that whim for me,” she said.

“We loved the louvres too because they give you air flow even if it’s raining — you can just tilt them.

“The façade was protected, and we had to contend with the house shape as it was, but Chris worked with Monster to ensure we had a very modern environment inside — we like clean lines.”

The original home was built in 1913 and was worse for wear when the Souvlis’ took ownership of it.

“Literally every board has had to be replaced,” Ms Souvlis said.

“The melding of the old aesthetic with the new has come up very well and the only reason we are moving is because we need to downsize.”

AFTER: The property at 44 Crase St, Teneriffe, now has an entirely different look.

There are two grandchildren who are very disappointed to lose access to the property’s showpiece indoor-outdoor pool with Florida room-style enclosure.

“The grandkids run straight in and want to jump in the pool immediately,” Ms Souvlis said.

“They have also loved exploring in the little easement beside us where we take the dogs for a walk. This street is so quiet and tucked away.”

Just moments from New Farm Park, James Street and blue-ribbon educational offerings, 44 Crase Street is being marketed by Matt Lancashire of Ray White New Farm and is scheduled to go auction on Thursday, April 27.
