SEASONED nomads Candice Silver and Tom Price aren’t just handy with a map and gas stove, they’ve also got some serious construction chops.

After roughing it on the road circumnavigating Australia with sons Asher and Levi, the former Sydneysiders emerged with a new found sense of purpose.

And they channelled it into 113 Evelyn Street in Grange.

“We did some travel and soul searching,” Ms Silver said.

“Sydney just didn’t fit anymore, and we decided to move to Brisbane and buy an old Queenslander, which has always been my favourite type of home.

“I think after travelling in such remote areas for so long we realised we could do big things and still be okay.

“That gave us the confidence to tackle a renovation.”

Their “fixer-upper” in Grange’s coveted “Golden Triangle” sparked a deep attachment to the suburb.

Now very much on the other side of this transformative project, the family is ready to do it all again.

“We are absolutely in love with Grange,” Ms Silver said.

“The Queenslander homes, obviously, but also just the great community of the suburb – we have not missed Sydney at all.

“We are definitely staying in Queensland and staying right here in Grange, and we are officially on the lookout for our new project.”

Evelyn Street was “old and tired” when they took it on, and the refurbishment uncovered a few surprises in its structure.

“Our builder found an old bed frame nailed into the internal framing,” Ms Silver said.

“At its working-class roots and following the depression era, those who lived in Grange used whatever they had available to do repairs.

“The kitchen was in original pre war condition and the bathroom was in all sorts of mess - it even had a window that vented into the kitchen.”

Keeping the character facade intact, the renovation developed a Byron-Bay inspired coastal aesthetic as it took shape - an ode to the family’s new “laid-back” way of life.

“Sydney is so uptight compared to Brisbane,” Ms Silver said.

“People here talk about their hobbies and interests, not just their work.

“We wanted this place to be an entertainers’ home and it has allowed us to host the last two Christmases here with more than 30 guests, so we did manage that.”

The 468 sqm floorplan is a celebration of easy living, with breeze-catching louvres, low maintenance polished concrete flooring and extra-height stacker doors spilling onto an alfresco terrace and Calile Hotel-inspired pool.

The fixtures lend to an eco-friendly style of comfort, with vaulted ceilings and skylights in the main bedroom for natural illumination and all three bathrooms featuring cool marble vanities and earthy limestone floors.

Mr Price, an electrical engineer, developed a bespoke home automation system Ms Silver said was “compatible with pretty much every device”.

“Anything you can think of can operate remotely and be controlled with the push of one button,” she said.

113 Evelyn Street is less than 5km to the Brisbane CBD and easy walking distance to the local library, parks, schooling options and Kedron Brook.

The home is now for sale through Tyson Clarke of Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty, Brisbane and priced in the early $4 millions.
