A classic post-war home at 121 Verney Road East, Graceville, built and owned by cricket and baseball legend Jack McLaughlin who passed away aged 93 in March this year, has come on the market for the first time.

Born in 1930 in Scott Street, Corinda, Jack McLaughlin moved with his parents and 3 siblings to the house next door in 1938, which became the family home and remained in the McLaughlin name until 2017.

In 1952, Jack McLaughlin purchased the block next door from his father and built his modest post-war home in which he raised his family.

The three-bedroom, one-bathroom home became a drop-in point for locals, cricket greats, family, friends and those seeking Jack’s knowledge or guidance where they would share a beer or have a laugh.

Set on a 562sq m block with two street frontage to Connor Street and within walking distance of cafes, Graceville train station and Graceville Memorial Park.

The home in a highly sought-after Graceville street is ready for its next chapter.

His son John McLaughlin, a solicitor based in Springwood, said one of his fondest memories in the family home was having Australian cricket greats over for dinner.

“Sitting by my father’s knee when he had friends over, it would be normal for an Australian cricketer to come over for dinner and sit around our table and discuss the cricket events of the time”, Mr McLaughlin said.

“He was an excellent sportsman and an everlasting legacy to Graceville.

“The Western Suburbs District cricket club named their number one oval after him in a matter of days after his passing.

“I think his legacy was that of community involvement.

“He was awarded an AOM in 2000 for services to community and sport, visiting the sick and the elderly.

“Those sorts of things will live on and inspire others.

“He was a very religious man; his church was one street away, the sporting oval was two streets away, where he spent all his youth and cricketing, his later years at the bowls club, the fellowship and the comradeship of the Gracevillites”.

Mr McLaughlin said he hoped the new owners respect the home’s integrity.

“Irrespective of what the shape of the house takes in years to come, I hope it won’t lose that sense of warmth, friendship, and welcoming environment that came from everything my Dad nurtured”.

Property agent Charles Wiggett from Haus Realty Graceville said he’s feeling good about the Brisbane property market.

“I’m pretty upbeat about it, it’s certainly a little bit all over the place, but houses are still selling”, Mr Wiggett said.

“The stock is down in Brisbane, and buyers are still strongly negotiating.

“I think the worst of it is over, and from now on, I think it’ll be somewhat angulating.

“We’re getting good listings and sales; Graceville is a great location.

“What we’re finding is people are still buying and selling.

“My clearance rate at the moment is 95%, there’s only been a few I haven’t been able to do, and that has to do with pricing versus market expectations”.
