This big backyard in inner Brisbane is the only one in Queensland to make the finals shortlist for a national garden award thanks to its stunning redesign.

The James Garden Pavilion designed by UME Architecture for a New Farm residence in inner Brisbane is one of nine backyards short-listed across Australia for the Garden or Landscape category at the 2023 Houses Awards.

UME (you-me) Architecture is a rebranded firm after two practices were merged – Channon Architects and Burton Architects.

The firm told the jury that “the project attempts to activate a large, under-utilised backyard with impressive views of the Brisbane CBD through a series of landscape interventions” which includes the addition of the pool, pavilion, sundeck, fire pit and BBQ.

The precise blocklaying was by Elvis & Rose and the stunning concrete work by Wildsky Construction.
